Introduction to the Book of Acts

The Book of Acts tells the remarkable story of how Jesus Christ continued His work through the Holy Spirit and the early Church. Written by Luke as a continuation of his Gospel, Acts begins with the risen Jesus preparing His disciples for His ascension. He promises that they will receive power from the Holy Spirit and become His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

Throughout the book, we see this promise gradually fulfilled. The Holy Spirit comes upon the believers at Pentecost, Peter boldly proclaims the Gospel, and thousands of people place their faith in Jesus. The Church grows despite opposition and persecution. The Gospel crosses cultural, ethnic, and geographical boundaries as Samaritans, Gentiles, government officials, families, and entire communities hear the good news of Jesus Christ.

Acts introduces us to important people such as Peter, Stephen, Philip, Barnabas, Paul, Priscilla, Aquila, and many other faithful followers of Jesus. However, the principal actor throughout the book is the Holy Spirit. He empowers believers, guides missionaries, strengthens the Church, and advances the Gospel.

As we study Acts together, we will discover what it means to be a Spirit-empowered, prayerful, loving, and mission-focused church. We will learn how the first Christians worshipped, shared their lives, cared for people in need, faced persecution, resolved disagreements, and carried the Gospel into unfamiliar places.

The story of Acts also reminds us that God’s mission did not end with the early Church. Jesus continues to build His Church today, calling people from every nation, language, and culture into His family. As a church plant made up of people from many backgrounds, we are invited to participate in this continuing story—gathering in Christ, growing through His Word, and moved by His Spirit!
